Tulsa Among Most Livable Cities

9 Apr

Tulsa is near the top of the list on Forbes.com recent list of “America’s Most Livable Cities”. In fact, they rated our city #5, right before Oklahoma City, based on metropolitan area statistics. While it may not have accounted for natural beauty or architecture it appears the study was very formulaic when comparing metro regions on five-year income growth per household and cost of living from Moody’s Economy.com, crime data and leisure index from Sperling’s Best Places, and annual unemployment statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Get ready for a huge tourism boom. My bet is people will be flocking here once they see this! :)

Meadow Gold Sign Resurrected

8 Apr

The Meadow Gold Sign is finally going back up! This has been both a Tulsa and Route 66 icon since the 1930’s and will be here for years to come thanks to the TFA. I am appreciative of their efforts and think this will be a nice addition to the 11th Street area as well.

Meadow Gold Sign Returns To Tulsa’s Route 66
By Rick Wells, newson6.com

TULSA, OK — There are 24 miles of historic Route 66 running through Tulsa. Along it are bits and pieces of our history. One of those bits and pieces has been restored and is being re-erected along the historic pathway.

It is a new home near 11th and Quaker for the Meadow Gold Milk sign that lit-up the corner of 11th and Lewis along historic Route 66 for decades.

“Everyone who’s been involved in this sign is just happy this day has finally come, when the sign parts and letters are finally going back up,” said Lee Anne Ziegler.

It took a long time, longer than anyone thought it would to get the sign back up.

In the 1930’s, Meadow Gold put it up atop a small building at 11th and Lewis. It was a beacon along Route 66 until sometime in the 1970’s.

“It’s more than just a sign, it lives in people’s hearts and memories it truly is a landmark,” said Lee Anne Ziegler.

Julius Shulman Film Preview

The Modernism of Julius Shulman – A Documentary Film by Eric Bricker

This documentary on iconic Shulman is looking to be pretty sweet. I expect some fantastic imagery and insight into Mid Century Modern architecture. And it’s narrated by Dustin Hoffman! He must be a modern guy!? Check out the trailer at the link below to wet your appetite. This will be screened in advance of its official release at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, May 1-3 along with an exhibit featuring Shulman’s photography from this region.

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics explores the monumental career of 98-year-old architectural photographer, Julius Shulman. Populating his photos with human models and striking landscapes, Shulman combined the organic with the synthetic, melding nature with revolutionary urban design. The resulting images helped to shape the careers of some of the greatest architects of the 20th Century, with Shulman documenting the work of Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Pierre Koenig, John Lautner, and many others.
